User safety guard rails on bridges along Kambiri-Kakamega, Kambiri-Shanderema and Kakamega-Kisumu roads within Kakamega County in western Kenya have been cut and carted away by suspected scrap metal vandals.
). All the standard galvanized heavy-duty bridge guard rails, including steel posts and spacers are all gone
). The missing rails leave the bridge sides open and dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians
). Drivers, riders and walkers face a high risk of falling into the river, especially at night foul weather like the impending El Nino flooding meteorologists say shall occur in the last quarter of 2026
). Though metal theft has continued to damage public infrastructure across Kenya , Kakamega was the last place any one would have expected to witness it
). The bridges along River Isiukhu have historical importance as they were constructed by the colonial British authorities in the 1950s and 1960s
). Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya National Highways Authority have a tall order in having the criminals vandalising infrastructure apprehended and sanctioned.
